Seizing the Momentum for the Muslim Community

Seizing the Momentum for the Muslim Community

By Imam Shamsi Ali

I've written several times about the highly dynamic and intriguing New York City mayoral election. The race has garnered significant attention, not only because the incumbent, Eric Adams, seems to be trailing behind but also due to the paradoxical nature of the two leading candidates.

On one hand, there's Andrew Cuomo, a former governor symbolizing political dynasty and the past. On the other hand, there's Zohran Mamdani, representing the broader society and a more promising future. Although Cuomo still holds a top position, Zohran Mamdani has been catching up, and the gap between them is narrowing. Cuomo's popularity is waning, while Zohran's popularity and electability are on the rise.

With broader support, particularly among young people and the lower-middle class, Zohran has a significant momentum and opportunity to win this contest. Encouragingly, there's a trend among New York City's political leaders, including potential mayoral candidates, to favor Zohran.

The Muslim Community's Role

There are over 1 million Muslims in New York City, making up around 10% of the population, with approximately 250,000 to 300,000 registered Muslim voters. This significant number can determine the outcome of certain public positions, including the mayoral election.

Given this potential and with support from millennials and other citizens, particularly non-white Italians and potentially some non Zionist Jewish communities, Zohran Mamdani, who proudly introduces himself as "the first Muslim candidate for NYC Mayor," has substantial opportunities. His popularity and electability are trending upward as the election day approaches.

Positive Trends

Moreover, Andrew Cuomo's candidacy is viewed by many New York City political leaders as a threat to democracy and a common enemy. As Zohran Mamdani faces off against Cuomo, there's a likelihood that New York City's political leaders, including other candidates like Adrienne Adams, the current City Council Speaker, might support Zohran. Notably, Jumaane Williams, the NYC Public Advocate, could also back Zohran if Adrienne Adams doesn't run.

The momentum for change among New York City's youth, particularly after Donald Trump's presidency, also favors Zohran. Despite Cuomo's attempts to portray himself as an antithesis to Trump, many recognize that Cuomo's supporters often overlap with Trump's. This fuels the desire among young people and millennials for a leader who can genuinely counter extremist politics.

A Call to Action for the Muslim Community

Zohran may not be considered an ideal candidate by some. However, given the current landscape, he is arguably the most suitable candidate, especially when compared to a former governor embroiled in harassment and corruption allegations.

Zohran Mamdani's advocacy for peace and humanity, particularly in the context of the Gaza conflict, marks him as a distinctive figure in politics. His vocal opposition to the treatment of Palestinians and support for humanitarian causes make him stand out. Not many politicians are as outspoken about their convictions.

I urge all members of the Muslim community, particularly those with voting rights, to support and vote for Zohran Mamdani as the next Mayor of New York City. This is an opportunity for the city and the Muslim community to make history by electing a young, energetic, intelligent, and integrity-driven Muslim politician and immigrant to lead one of the world's greatest cities.

InshaAllah!
