Stop Before You Are Stopped Forever

Shamsi Ali Al-Newyorki

The digital world never sleeps, particularly those of us living in the city that never sleeps, it keeps pushing us to move and chase. Fingers scroll endlessly, minds chase validation, while hearts quietly lose their way. We often appear busy, yet silently, we are breaking. The world teaches us to move always, to run after limitless desires, as if stopping were weakness, as if pausing were failure.

Here, the wukuf at ‘Arafah teaches us the opposite: the art of stopping. Stopping the noise. Stopping the chase. And, more profoundly, stopping the deep corruption within. Millions stand there in identical garments, stripped of titles and worldly pride. They bring nothing but their sins, their hopes, and their tears. On that plain, we learn that life is not about who stands highest, greatest, or most revered. It is about who bows lowest in humility before the Most High.

Today, amid the world’s ruthless competition, how many have lost their own ‘Arafah? Their physical beings may apparently rest, but their souls rebel, and exhausted. Their homes glow with light, yet their hearts remain dark. We forget that not every wound is healed by entertainment, and not every anxiety is drowned out by noise. There is an emptiness that only sincere submission, prostration (sujuud) and reflection can fill.

This reminds us, Wukuf at ‘Arafah always shakes the heart. Because there, we finally face ourselves with sincerity and honesty. We confront the years that have slipped away, the mountain of sins we carry, and a heart too busy chasing and loving this world so much. Wukuf teaches one vital lesson: before life itself is stopped by death, stop for a moment and return to Him. Bismillah!
